Young Brits dream of solid careers rather than creative or caring professions, a study from John Lewis Insurance has found.

The number one childhood ambition of 18-35s was to be a vet. The typical salary for this job is £31,152 a year, according to PayScale.

And 18-35-year-olds were more keen on becoming an accountant than either of the previous generations.

So far they are achieving their well-paid dream – one in 20 young Brits are accountants, compared to one in 33 for older generations.

Varun Khanna, from careers site Fish4Jobs, said: “We’ve definitely seen an increase in interest in accountancy roles on Fish4Jobs. Accountancy is the eighth most-searched term and it makes up a huge share of applications.

“The number of jobs in the sector is rising, and you can get a job anywhere in the UK. Many roles have a starting salary of £25,000. This can grow up to £45,000 once you’ve gained qualifications.

Working Feedback -“SEC official: Close to recommendations on global accounting.”

A U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission official said on Monday he may have recommendations “in the near future” on the use by U.S. corporations of global accounting standards, suggesting a formal decision may be near after a long impasse.

SEC Chief Accountant James Schnurr said in a speech that he does not have a predetermined view on an approach to the long-standing issue of harmonizing corporate accounting worldwide. He noted that full adoption of global accounting standards generally does not have support in the United States.

Accountants smash charity fundraising record!!!

Exeter accountants and financial planners Old Mill have smashed their 2014 fundraising target of £5,000 and raised £22,000 for the Piers Simon Appeal’s School in a Bag initiative.

School in a Bag is a Yeovil based charity that provides rucksacks filled with stationery, learning resources and eating utensils to poor, orphan, vulnerable and disaster-affected children around the globe and is Old Mill chosen charity for 2014. Staff have organised a number of fundraising events throughout the year, the biggest being a 140-mile bike challenge in July.

Nineteen staff from across the firm cycled from the Melksham office to the Exeter office via the Wells, Yeovil and Dorchester offices, raising £15,500.

Staff also held a Golf Day in October which raised £2,534 and organised smaller events throughout the year including filling Smartie tubes with 20ps, bake-offs, quiz nights and dress down days which raised a further £3,293.
